The Synology DS124 is a compact one-bay NAS enclosure for individuals, home offices and small workspaces that want a central place for files and backups. Its Realtek RTD1619B quad-core processor, 1 GB DDR4 memory and Gigabit Ethernet port provide an approachable platform for DSM file sharing, Synology Drive access and cloud synchronisation. Two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports support external storage or backup devices, while DSM also provides tools for photo management, system backup and Surveillance Station. The DS124 uses a single internal SATA drive, so it is best suited to centralised storage where a separate backup destination is part of the plan. The enclosure is diskless: a compatible hard drive or SSD is sold separately, and 2.5-inch drives need an optional Type C holder. Check Synology’s current compatibility list before purchasing the drive. The supported internal RAID mode is Basic.
